The Art O'Neil Challenge, Jan. 2011

Updated on Jan. 09th, 2011

The Art O Neill Challenge is an arduous trek from Dublin Castle in Dublin city centre to the Glenmalure Valley in south Wicklow, re-tracing the escape route of Art O Neill and Red Hugh O Donnell in 1592.
The 2009 edition was an outstanding success and the demand for another challenge inspired the 2011 version.
500 hardy souls signed up for the 2011 challenge and left Dublin castle on Friday night in two groups, the walkers at midnight and those running all or part of the way at 2.00am.

The route stayed on tramac and snowy roads as far as check point 1 at Kipurre House and then headed cross country to Checkpoint 2 in Glenbride where Track and Trail (www.trackandtrail.ie) had a huge pot of Flahavan's porridge! All that was left then was a hike over to Glenmalure via Art's cross

Art O Neill Challenge is to feature in the RTE Radio Live History Show with Myles Dungan. Gearoid Towey and TCD historian Michael O Siochru will be in conversation with Myles with audience phone ins!! Sunday November 28th at 6pm on Radio 1.

The race photos have been broken up into galleries covering different sections of the race in chronological order:

1. Pre race Dublin Castle and the walk start here.
2. Pre race Dublin Castle and the run start here.
3. The road section and Kipurre house here.
4. Check point 2 Porridge station- part 1 here.

We took around 1,500 shots on Friday and Saturday so if don't see yourself in one of the galleries or there's a shot with you half hidden behind someone else mail us with the file name and we'll see what other shots we have.
