The Howth Challenge Triathlon - July 2011

Updated on July 18th, 2011

The Day started blustery with strong winds whipping up the Irish sea and the swim from Ireland's eye looked like it would go by the way side but the weather cleared somewhat and 131 "Olympic Plus" swimmers were shipped out to the island. The swim was given at approximately a 1.8 km which varied depending on the course swum by the competitors buffeted by the winds with navigation made more difficult by the sea chop.

Once ashore the bike course had a fast flat start along the sea front before the steep climb to the summit pub and the fact descent back toward Sutton cross. This was followed by three more laps and then it was onto the 10 km run, flat along the sea front and then an other steep hill up along the Balscadden Road and out to the car park at the end if the road. for those had the time to look around there was superb views of the Irish sea and the coastline stretching northwards. On the return lag these was a detour out to the end of the east pear before heading to the finish area and heading out again for a second lap.

The 162 in the Sprint race had a shorter, (750m), sea swim from the shore behind the DART station, before two laps of the cycle course and one lap of the run course.

The eventual winner of the Olympic+ race was Kevin Thornton in a time of 2:32:08 with Matt Coughlan second in 2:43:15 and Gavin Smullen in third place. The first women was Vanessa Fenton in 2:58:28 ahead of Sarah Lane (3:03:00) and Jennifer O'Connell(3:09:40)
